Discover the History of Fort Walton Beach

The original inhabitants date all the way back to 12,000 BC when humans first migrated to the region in search of hunting grounds. These early settlers eventually became the most politically advanced tribe in all of Florida and lived in prosperity from 1100 AD to the mid-1500s. During this time, they built the Fort Walton Temple Mound, which survives to this day. A few hundred years later, long after the Spanish had begun exploring the area, the gulf exploded with ships carrying goods from the Americas back to Europe, and stories of the pirate Captain William Augustus Bowles began to spread. Though there isn't any historical evidence he operated in the area, Captain "Billy Bowlegs" is still a local legend!

The region remained relatively unchanged until the start of the American Civil War when it became the site for Camp Walton. Named after Colonel George Walton, the Confederate settlement was tasked with protecting the nearby sound. It was one of the soldiers stationed at this camp who became the area's first permanent settler and whose descendant remained a notable figure in local history for his contributions. It wasn't until the 1930s that the most significant developments began, including a casino, beachfront cottages, and a large military base. Following this expansive growth, Fort Walton Beach became a hub for famous figures, including the infamous Al Capone.

Recharted in both 1947 and 1953, the town was officially deemed a city and renamed the City of Fort Walton Beach. It was after this that the population began to expand rapidly, becoming one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. Now, this city celebrates its background through an assortment of festivals and historical sites, which give both locals and tourists a chance to learn about its colorful past. The local economy continues to boom thanks to its wealth of attractions and proximity to Eglin Air Force Base, as well as multiple manufacturing companies, making it a safe bet for future economic growth!
