This year, Melinda Vazquez is celebrating a major professional milestone: 10 years with Coldwell Banker.
Over the past decade, Melinda has built a real estate career rooted in advocacy, problem-solving, negotiation, and trust. From helping buyers and sellers navigate complex transactions to serving in leadership roles within the real estate community, her journey reflects both professional growth and a deep commitment to the people she serves.
To celebrate this milestone, we asked Melinda to reflect on what first brought her into real estate, why Coldwell Banker has remained the right professional home, what she has learned along the way, and what she is looking forward to next.
How does it feel to celebrate 10 years with Coldwell Banker?
“Ten years have flown by,” Melinda says. “I cannot believe it has already been 10 years. There is never a boring day in real estate, and I learn something new every single day.”
That constant learning has been one of the defining themes of Melinda’s career. Real estate is not a one-size-fits-all industry. Markets shift, contracts evolve, client needs change, and every transaction brings its own set of circumstances. For Melinda, that is part of what keeps the work meaningful.
After 10 years with Coldwell Banker, she continues to approach her career with the same curiosity and commitment she had when she started, while bringing a decade of experience to each buyer, seller, and real estate decision.
What first inspired you to become a REALTOR®?
For Melinda, the inspiration came from her own experience buying a waterfront home.
“The purchase of my waterfront home was a very enlightening experience,” she says. “I learned so much about the behind-the-scenes activities because my friend was my REALTOR®.”
The process was not simple. The seller was dealing with foreclosure and bankruptcy at the same time, making it a long and complicated transaction. Through that experience, Melinda saw firsthand how much of a difference a knowledgeable, steady, and skilled REALTOR® can make.
“My REALTOR® maneuvered us through the process and kept everything together when I was losing my mind,” Melinda says.
Later, when she began considering a career change, that experience stayed with her. She remembered how impactful her REALTOR® had been during such a stressful and complicated purchase. Then she realized something important: she had the same skill set and the ability to help others through meaningful, high-pressure real estate decisions.
That firsthand perspective continues to shape how she serves her clients today. Melinda knows what it feels like to be on the client side of a complicated transaction, which is one reason advocacy has become such a central part of her work.
Why did you choose Coldwell Banker, and how has it been the right professional home for you?
When Melinda was deciding where to build her real estate career, Coldwell Banker stood out.
“Coldwell Banker has a stellar training program and top-notch marketing availability,” she says. “Plus, Coldwell Banker has been around for 120 years. It is one of the longest-standing brands in the business, and that carries a lot of credibility.”
For Melinda, the decision was not only about joining a recognizable name. It was about choosing a brokerage with the training, tools, marketing resources, reputation, and professional culture she wanted behind her.
“The culture of our team is amazing,” she says. “I looked into other brokerages and business models, and Coldwell Banker took the top spot in comparison to all others.”
That combination of brand credibility, professional support, and team culture has made Coldwell Banker the right home for Melinda’s career over the past decade.
What has changed most in real estate over the past decade?
Real estate has changed in many ways over the last 10 years, but one of the most significant recent shifts Melinda points to is the removal of commissions offered through the MLS.
“Commissions have always been negotiable,” Melinda explains. “Now, the buyer’s agent must negotiate that with their buyer upfront and have a signed Buyer Broker Agreement.”
For buyers and sellers, changes like this can feel confusing without the right guidance. That is why Melinda believes clear communication matters so much. Clients deserve to understand what is happening, what their options are, and how industry changes may affect their specific transaction.
The details of real estate may evolve, but Melinda’s responsibility remains the same: to advocate for her clients, help them understand the process, and guide them with care and confidence.
What is one of the biggest lessons you have learned?
Melinda’s answer is simple but powerful: “Trust, but verify.”
“I always assume that everything is done the way it should be,” she says. “However, that is not always the case.”
In real estate, details matter. Contracts, deadlines, inspections, financing, repairs, title work, disclosures, negotiations, and closing documents all involve moving pieces that need to be handled carefully. Experience has taught Melinda not to assume everything is complete or correct simply because it should be.
For her, “trust, but verify” is not about expecting something to go wrong. It is about being thorough, proactive, and protective of her clients’ interests. That attention to detail can make a meaningful difference during a transaction, especially when the situation becomes complicated.
What client moments or career highlights stand out most?
Some of Melinda’s most memorable moments have come from complex transactions.
“I truly enjoy navigating complex sales when sellers have significant challenges with properties,” she says. “I enjoy problem-solving and negotiating. Maybe I should have been a lawyer? Ha!”
That problem-solving mindset has become one of her strengths. Whether a property has challenges, negotiations become layered, or a transaction requires extra coordination, Melinda enjoys working through the details and finding a path forward.
Her career highlights also include meaningful recognition and leadership within the real estate industry.
Melinda has been recognized as REALTOR® of the Year by her peers, a distinction that reflects not only her work with clients but also the respect she has earned within the professional community. She has also been deeply involved at the association level, including serving two terms as Treasurer during major transitions in the industry and being elected President of her MLS Board of Directors.
Those milestones show that Melinda’s impact extends beyond individual transactions. She has invested her time, knowledge, and leadership into the systems and professional standards that support the broader real estate community.
How would you describe the way you serve buyers and sellers today?
Melinda describes her approach with three words:
“Advocate. Advocate. Advocate.”
“My client, buyer or seller, is always first,” she says. “I take my duty as their advocate very seriously.”
That advocacy shows up in many ways. It means explaining options clearly. It means paying attention to details. It means negotiating with confidence. It means asking questions, verifying information, and helping clients make informed decisions.
For Melinda, negotiation is a major part of serving clients well.
“You never know unless you ask,” she says. “If you do not ask the question, it is an automatic no.”
That philosophy reflects the way she approaches each transaction. She is not there simply to open doors or put a sign in the yard. She is there to represent her clients’ interests, protect their goals, and help them move through the process with confidence.
What are you most looking forward to in the next chapter of your career?
As Melinda looks ahead, she is excited to help more people achieve financial stability through homeownership and investing.
Real estate, in Melinda’s view, is one of the most powerful tools people can use to build long-term stability and wealth. Whether someone is buying their first home, selling a property, relocating, downsizing, or investing, she wants to help them understand their options and make decisions that support their future.
She is also looking forward to continuing her own professional growth.
“My Broker’s license — that’s next!” she says.
After 10 years with Coldwell Banker, Melinda is not slowing down. This milestone is not a finish line. It is a foundation for the next chapter of learning, leading, serving, and helping more people move forward through real estate.
What message would you like to share with the people who have trusted, referred, encouraged, and supported you throughout your real estate career?
“In this business, trust isn’t given lightly, and it’s never something I take for granted,” Melinda says. “Every referral, every introduction, and every opportunity to represent someone in such an important decision carries real responsibility.”
That sense of responsibility has shaped the way Melinda serves her clients and grows her business.
“I approach that with the same level of care and attention to detail every time,” she says. “My clients’ confidence in me has not only helped grow my business, it has pushed me to continually improve, stay accountable, and raise the standard of how I serve my clients and our industry.”
As she celebrates this 10-year milestone, Melinda is deeply grateful for the relationships, loyalty, and belief people have placed in her.
“I remain committed to earning that trust every single day,” she says.
