Often referred to as the “Best Kept Secret in Florida” by locals, Navarre is a quiet community with a long history. Although originally found in 1693 by Spanish explorers traveling from Mexico, it was nearly 200 years before this area was officially recognized as a village and given the name Eagan. Long before it was developed into the picturesque place it is now, Eagan consisted of only a single post office and a handful of families. Four decades later, the area was purchased by Colonel Guy Wyman and renamed by his French wife to "Navarre." Unfortunately, the Great Depression soon followed, and the area saw very little change, remaining a sleepy village for nearly another forty years.
It wasn’t until the 1960s, when the Navarre Beach Causeway was built, that the population and community began to grow. Since then, the area has seen rapid development and has changed into a must-see locale. Now well-known for its scenic beaches, Navarre offers a plethora of water activities for both visitors and locals. The beaches were even featured in Jaws 2 and were used as a set for many of the scenes! While some people may spot an actual shark or two, beachgoers are much more likely to see sea turtles or dolphins swimming in the lovely emerald waters. To get the best view, it's an easy walk down the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier, the longest fishing pier in Florida.
Despite all the rapid growth, there has been much success in shifting Navarre into an ecotourist location. The area has multiple wildlife preserves and sanctuaries, making it a wonderful place for nature lovers. Many of these facilities have education outreach programs, so it’s simple for anyone interested in learning about the native wildlife to visit and see them up close! This history of preservation has been a part of the community from the start, with much of the land originally sold by the founder Wyman being turned into a local park.
With just over 44,000 residents, Navarre has a small-town feel while still being able to offer all kinds of activities and shopping for both locals and tourists alike. Due to multiple nearby military bases and seasonal visitors, there is no lack of business to keep the local economy going and plenty of room for growth.
